Average Transaction Value Formula: How to Calculate AOV

Average transaction value, also called average order value or AOV, tells you how much a typical customer spends per visit. Here's the formula, a worked example, and the two different levers that actually move it.

The formula

AOV = Total Sales ÷ Number of Transactions
Use total sales for the same period as your transaction count, usually a day or a week, so the number reflects a consistent stretch of business rather than mixing time frames.

Worked example

Total sales this week$8,400
Transactions this week210
AOV$40.00

$8,400 ÷ 210 = $40.00. That number alone doesn't say much in isolation, it becomes useful once you track it week over week and compare it against items per transaction, since the two together tell you whether growth is coming from bigger baskets or higher prices.

Two ways to grow it, and they're not the same

Watching AOV next to items per transaction tells you which lever is actually doing the work, instead of guessing.

Why weekly beats monthly for this one

A monthly AOV smooths out everything that's actionable — a bad week gets buried in a good month, and by the time you notice, three or four weeks of coaching opportunity are already gone. Checking it weekly, alongside sales per labor hour, is what turns AOV from a report-card number into something you can actually coach a team around in real time.

Track AOV alongside labor and shrink, automatically

Retail Ops OS calculates AOV, items per transaction, and sales per hour from the same weekly numbers you're already logging, no separate spreadsheet.
